THE HUNGER GAMES Takes Down the TITANS – Weekend Box Office Report (March 30 – April 1, 2012)

It was an expected holdover, but last weekend’s champ The Hunger Games came in at #1 again.  The Lionsgate action flick took in another estimated $61.1 million, for an estimated total of $251.0 million.  The film did drop 59.9% from last weekend’s $152.5 million opening, but it’s still holding incredibly well.  At this point, nearly everyone who had interest has seen the film, so for these next few weeks, the box office for The Hunger Games is likely relying on fans that are going back for multiple viewings (Click here for my review of The Hunger Games).

At #2 was the Warner Bros. sequel Wrath of the Titans, pulling in an estimated $34.2 million.  This is about half of the opening for 2010’s Clash of the Titans, which isn’t good news for Warner Bros., as Wrath had a production budget of $150 million, whereas Clash had one of $125 million.  However, the foreign box office pulled in an estimated $78.0 million, for an estimated total of $112.2 million.  And, as there isn’t much coming out in the next few weeks appealing to the same, young male audience, it’s likely that it will stay in the top 5 for the next few weeks (Click here for my review of Wrath of the Titans).

At #3 was Relativity’s family film Mirror Mirror, which opened with an estimated $19.0 million.  This is more than $10 million less than the opening for Mirror Mirror director Tarsem Singh’s last film, Immortals, which was also distributed by Relativity.  While it was wise of Relativity to release Mirror Mirror now, where there is a dearth of family films in theaters, they ultimately picked too crowded of a weekend for their film to perform successfully.  Despite it’s additional $11.9 million gross in the foreign box office, it’s likely that it won’t cross too far past its $85 million production budget, if at all.

And, interestingly, at #7 was the CBS Films drama Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, pulling in an estimated $1.3 million.  The film had been in limited release since mid-March, but an expansion in 359 theaters this weekend gave it an 81.3% boost.  The film caters more towards the adult demographic, which is great counter marketing for the rest of this weekend’s top 10, which all appeal to a younger audience.
