THINK LIKE A MAN Wins over the GAMES – Weekend Box Office Report (April 20 – 22, 2012)

After four weeks of The Hunger Games sitting comfortably at #1, a new champion has taken over.  ScreenGems’ new comedy Think Like a Man opened at #1 with an impressive estimated $33.0 million.  This is great news for ScreenGems, as it has made nearly triple its $12 million production budget.  Next weekend is crowded for new releases, so it could drop a bit, but word-of-mouth is strong, and it’ll likely hold somewhere in the top 5.

At #2 was the new Nicholas Sparks adaptation from Warner Bros., The Lucky One, with an estimated $22.8 million.  This is definitely on the disappointing end for Nicholas Sparks movies.  Also, this past February’s The Vow, which wasn’t actually based off of a Sparks book, but is geared towards the same audience, opened at #1 with a huge $41.2 million.

At #3 was the Lionsgate blockbuster The Hunger Games, grossing another estimated $14.5 million.  It’s grossed an estimated $356.9 million to date, and is currently the #19 domestic highest grossing film of all time, sitting right behind Jurassic Park (Click here for my review of The Hunger Games).

At #4 was DisneyNature’s latest Earth Day entry, Chimpanzee, which opened with an estimated $10.2 million, the highest-ever opening for a DisneyNature release.  Part of the film’s proceeds also goes to the Jane Goodall Foundation.

And the #5 and #6 spots went to last weekend’s releases, The Three Stooges and The Cabin in the Woods, which fell 45.9% and 47.4% respectively.  Stooges took in an estimated $9.2 million for the weekend, Cabin took in an estimated $7.8 million, and both films have made close to $30 million in total (Click here for my review of The Cabin in the Woods).
