MADAGASCAR 3 Dances to #1, PROMETHEUS Lands at #2 – Weekend Box Office Report (June 8 – 10, 2012)

It was a neck-and-neck race this weekend between the two wide releases Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Prometheus for the #1 spot, as both had large audiences and both were in 3D.  However, in the end, the family fare took the prize, as Madagascar opened with a strong, estimated $60.4 million.  This is about on par with the opening for the second Madagascar film, 2008’s Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and bigger than the last three DreamWorks Animation movies’ three-day openings.

As for the #2 spot, Fox’s sci-fi film Prometheus opened with an estimated $50.0 million.  This is Ridley Scott’s best opening since 2001’s Hannibal, and the biggest opening for any film in the Alien series, granted several of those came out many decades ago.  The film is also doing incredibly well in the foreign box office, for a worldwide estimated total of $141.5 million so far.  Therefore, it’s likely we’ll be seeing a Prometheus sequel in the works, as many audiences have demanded it (Click here for my review of Prometheus).

At #3 was last weekend’s #1 film, Universal’s fantasy flick Snow White and the Huntsman.  It fell 59.1% from last weekend’s huge opening, pulling in another estimated $23.0 million, for an estimated total of $98.5 million to date.  Overseas, the film has pulled in another estimated $83.5 million so far for a worldwide estimated total of $182.0 million, which is great news considering the production budget was $170 million (Click here for my review of Snow White and the Huntsman).

At #4 was the ever-plummeting Sony release Men in Black 3, which pulled in another estimated $13.5 million, for an estimated total of $135.5 million.  The reason this is bad news is because it had a production budget of $225 million, however rumors have said it was higher.  And at this rate, it’s likely we won’t be seeing a fourth Men in Black installment in the works (Click here for my review of Men in Black 3).

On the contrary, at #5 we had the mega-hit, Disney’s Marvel’s The Avengers, pulling in another estimated $10.8 million for an estimated total of $571.9 million so far.  It’s sitting comfortably as the #3 highest grossing film of all time in both the domestic and worldwide box offices, which will provide for tough competition another huge summer blockbuster releasing in July, The Dark Knight Rises (Click here for my review of Marvel’s The Avengers).

Finally, at #10 we had the hit limited release, Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom, which pulled in another estimated $1.6 million, for an estimated total of $3.8 million so far, despite playing in only 96 theaters.  It had the highest per-theater average out of the top ten, and will likely get a wide release in the weeks to come (Click here for my review of Moonrise Kingdom).
