DREDD – Movie Review

September 23, 2012 Leave a comment

Strictly based on the trailers, I had no interest in seeing Dredd.  I had no connection to the comics or the original Sylvester Stallone film, but nothing about the marketing made the movie look fun, original, or interesting.  However, to my surprise, there was strong word of mouth coming out of numerous screenings and festivals, which had my interest peaked.  Unfortunately, I found Dredd to be lifeless, dull, and the most overrated movie of the year so far. END OF WATCH – Movie Review

Based on the trailers, positive buzz, and two great lead actors, I was definitely looking forward to End of Watch.  Cop movies are tough to pull off, due to a number of clichés we’ve come to expect.  However, when done well, they can be some of the best movies out there.  And thankfully, due to great direction, fantastic performances, and well-fleshed out characters, this is one of the best cop dramas to come out in recent years. THE MASTER – Movie Review

Ever since the first teaser trailer was released, The Master has been my most anticipated movie of 2012.  Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s films are slow-building, character based, and unique, which is why many of his previous ones are some of my all-time favorites.  And while The Master isn’t quite as perfect as I wanted it to be, and is probably my least favorite of his to date, there is still a great deal to enjoy. TED – Movie Review

Seth MacFarlane has been pretty hit or miss for me over the years.  I’ve certainly enjoyed episodes of his shows Family Guy and American Dad, while others are lazily written, beating a joke, that wasn’t funny from the start, dead into the ground.  I was interested to see what he could do with his first feature film, Ted.  And it’s safe to say that it has both MacFarlane’s strengths and weaknesses as a comedian. I went into Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter with relatively low expectations.  The title and concept were intriguing, but all of the trailers looked way too dark and serious for a movie with this ridiculous of a premise.  Luckily, the movie embraces the goofiness and cheese, which is why I had fun with it.

RUBY SPARKS – Movie Review

June 18, 2012 1 comment

I saw Ruby Sparks at the 2012 LA Film Festival, and walked in with little expectation.  I hadn’t seen any trailers and roughly knew the film’s premise.  However, I did know that it was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the team behind Little Miss Sunshine; and while it’s not anywhere up to par with that film, there is a good amount to like.
